That feed should answer four questions:
What did it do?
Simple. Literal. Human-readable.
- Drafted a reply to Sarah about the contract
- Added dentist appointment to calendar for April 12 at 10 AM
- Marked six promotional emails as low priority
- Researched "best payroll software for 10-person startup" and summarized findings
No jargon. No token math. No detective work.
When did it do it?
Every action gets a timestamp. If something happened at 8:42 AM, say that. If a scheduled task ran overnight, show it. If it touched your inbox while you were asleep, that should not be a mystery.
Why did it do it?
This part matters more than most teams admit.
"Moved meeting due to conflict with existing calendar event."
"Paused send because your rules say to ask before emailing new contacts."
"Drafted only. Did not send."
That explanation is the difference between "helpful assistant" and "what the hell just happened?"
What can you do about it?
A real activity feed isn't just a receipt. It's a control surface. You should be able to approve, edit, cancel, undo when possible, and tighten rules after the fact.
If the feed only tells you what happened after the damage is done, that's better than nothing. But not by much. Transparency without control is just a nicer postmortem.
Activity feeds aren't a feature. They're the bare minimum.

Knowing what went wrong is nice. Preventing it is better.
A lot of AI systems still treat control like a technical exercise. Want real constraints? You end up in YAML, JSON, prompt spaghetti, workflow builders, or config files with 14 edge cases and one typo waiting to ruin your week.
That is not a serious way to manage something acting on your behalf.
You should be able to write rules in plain English:
- Ask before sending emails to people I haven't emailed before
- Don't delete anything without asking
- Never move meetings with investors automatically
- Summarize newsletters, but don't archive them
- Draft replies after 7 PM, but wait until morning for approval
- Flag anything that looks legal or financial
That's how humans think. That's how control should work.
Not everybody wants to become an amateur workflow engineer just to safely automate their inbox. The whole point of an assistant is reducing complexity, not moving it into a different interface.
And plain-English rules should be strict enough to matter. Not vague suggestions the model ignores when it's feeling creative. Rules. Actual AI agent guardrails. Enforced consistently.
Otherwise you're back to crossing your fingers.
"But power users want flexibility"
Sure. Some do.
For technical users, there will always be a place for deeper customization, self-hosting, and advanced workflows. But let's be honest about what most professionals want.
They don't want to spend Saturday afternoon debugging agent permissions. They don't want to read token usage charts to understand why costs spiked. They don't want to maintain a homegrown rule engine just to stop an assistant from emailing strangers.
They want this:
- Do useful work
- Show me what you did
- Ask before doing risky stuff
- Don't surprise me
That's not a niche preference. That's the mainstream expectation forming in real time.
Pricing transparency is part of AI assistant transparency
Let's say the quiet part out loud.
Transparency isn't just about actions. It's also about cost.
If your assistant can autonomously trigger model calls, workflows, searches, and integrations, pricing needs to be just as legible as behavior. Otherwise you're solving one black box with another.

4. Costs are predictable. No surprise bills. No hidden overages. No vague usage math.
5. You can leave. Export your data. Move on. No lock-in theater.
That's the bar. Not "nice to have." Not "enterprise roadmap." The bar.
This isn't just about one product
